History

Drupal Commerce arose from within the Ubercart project as a way to revitalize Ubercart development moving into Drupal 7. It was originally dubbed the Ubercore Initiative and involved separating the core systems of Ubercart into a project that would be developed alongside of an Ubercart Drupal distribution. For reasons mentioned in this blog post, Ubercore was renamed Drupal Commerce and separated from Ubercart in January 2010.

It should be noted that the original goal of Ubercore and thus the goal of Drupal Commerce was to re-implement the core features of Ubercart on Drupal 7 through a code rewrite. As soon as Drupal Commerce is usable, we expect (and encourage!) companies and individuals involved to develop Drupal Commerce powered distributions targeting specific e-commerce markets.

The following visualization is an attempt to portray as clearly as possible how the project came into its own:

Credit goes to Andy Lowe of Prima Supply for founding the Ubercart project. As Ryan has stepped down from Ubercart, Prima will be responsible for Ubercart's future maintenance and development.

We'd love for this history to be as clear and helpful as possible, so feel free to comment if further clarification is needed.

Great work guys

I really appreciate your work, what you're doing is admirable. Do you plan to release a drupal commerce version for drupal6 or you'll just leave ubercart2.x as is?
Thanks guys,keep going!!!

Drupal Commerce is being

Drupal Commerce is being built to incorporate the latest and greatest changes in Drupal 7, so a backport to Drupal 6 won't be possible. I'd still recommend and use Ubercart for sites built on Drupal 6.
