why is commerce kickstart admin menu missing?

Hi, I just fired up a brand new fresh install of Commerce Kickstart, but the admin menu is missing.

Does anyone have a pointer about how I can enable the main Commerce admin menu?

this is installed on a Windows8 PC using EasyPHP and a virtual host set up in the sites/testsite.com area. there are no modules installed in sites/testsite.com nor sites/all. i'm doing another new sample store install using no virtual local site to see if i have better luck with that.

This problem seems to be related to using the multi-site features of Drupal. The menus show up fine when I don't use a virtual host mapping, but don't appear at all when I use the virtual host mapping.
